Free outdoor kids activities in NYC light up the city every July, and this year the parks, waterfronts, and green spaces are more alive than ever, offering families a full season of movement, creativity, and discovery without spending a single dollar.
Splash into summer at the public pools
NYC Parks operates 55 free outdoor pools across the city, with lifeguards and staff on duty all season. These pools are open to every child, with no membership required. They cover all 5 boroughs, so access is rarely far from home.
During the summer, NYC Parks also offers free Learn to Swim classes at pools across the city. This program suits children who are just starting out in the water. Traditionally, the classes welcome children as young as 18 months, and all outdoor public pools reopened for the season on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
Join the Summer Sports Experience in your neighborhood playground
The Summer Sports Experience program engages children in active outdoor play, with an NYC Parks staff member leading free activities in city playgrounds. Activities include organized sports, games, fitness demos, board games, water games, and more. The program runs most days of the week and covers locations across every borough.
The Summer Sports Experience program engages children in active outdoor play, with an NYC Parks staff member leading 4 to 7 hours of free activities in NYC playgrounds. No registration is required. Simply arrive at a participating playground during the listed hours and join in.
Try free kayaking and canoeing on city water
Open to ages 7 and older, free kayaking is available from Pier 96 on the Hudson River on a first-come, first-served basis on weekends throughout the season, and on Mondays and Tuesdays from June through late August. This is one of the most beautiful free outdoor kids activities the city offers, with the Manhattan skyline as the backdrop.
Trained Urban Park Rangers also lead free canoe adventures ranging from the gentle waters of protected lakes to the open waters of rivers and bays, available for ages 8 and up. Free public kayaking at Brooklyn Bridge Park runs throughout the summer, welcoming all skill levels, including first-time paddlers, with life vests, equipment, and instruction provided.

Sign up for free coached sports at CityParks Play
The City Parks Foundation brings back CityParks Play from July through August, offering free sports programming in parks across New York City, open to kids and teens ages 6 to 17, with coached sessions held outdoors in local neighborhoods and all equipment supplied.
“New York City’s parks system is one of the most democratic spaces in the world. Every July, we see children from every background arrive at a park, pick up a racket or a soccer ball for the first time, and leave with a new skill and a new group of friends. Free sports programming removes every possible barrier. The child simply has to show up. That access to quality coaching, across all 5 boroughs, in a safe outdoor setting, is something very few cities in the world can offer at this scale. It builds physical confidence, team habits, and a lasting connection to public space that stays with children for years.”
Industry perspective, parks programming and youth sports professionals in New York City
In addition to tennis, the CityParks Foundation runs free summer sports programs in golf, soccer, and track and field for children who reside in NYC, and all equipment is provided. Sessions take place at sites including Central Park, Prospect Park, Riverside Park, Astoria Park, and Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
Explore nature with the Urban Park Rangers
The Urban Park Rangers connect children with nature to encourage active exploration of the natural world, and they serve as role models who encourage children to let their imaginations run in a safe, supportive atmosphere. Their summer calendar is one of the richest free outdoor kids activities programs in the city.
The Urban Park Rangers Weekend Adventures include canoeing, birding, hiking, survival skills, astronomy, and more, letting families experience New York City’s thousands of acres of parkland in a new way. During the summer, the Urban Park Rangers also host free overnight camping adventures in city parks, teaching children how to set up a tent and start a fire before leading a night hike, and they bring the tents and s’mores.

Watch free outdoor movies and theater in the parks
NYC Parks hosts free movie nights in parks across the city all summer, and families can pack a picnic and enjoy a free screening under the stars. Through the Movies Under the Stars program, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment brings popular films to parks and playgrounds across all 5 boroughs, with titles ranging from family favorites to recent hits.
Throughout the season, free plays ranging from Shakespearean classics to new works by emerging playwrights are staged in parks throughout the city. Every Saturday from June through August, families are invited to Central Park for live storytelling at the Hans Christian Andersen statue near the Boat Pond, now in its 70th year, with world-class storytellers and musicians sharing fairytales, folklore, and classic Andersen stories in a shaded outdoor setting.
