Children’s bookstores NYC: a family guide

Discover the city's most beautiful independent bookshops and live storytelling events for young readers across every borough.

Children’s bookstores in New York City are more than retail spaces. They are places where a child first falls in love with a story, a character, a world. For a city built on creativity and culture, this feels entirely right.

What makes NYC’s independent bookshops so special

A bookstore is the heart and soul of a neighborhood. It is a community gathering place, a hub to foster creativity, and an environment to learn and grow. New York City’s independent children’s bookstores carry this idea with real conviction. Each shop brings its own character, its own editorial point of view, and its own sense of beauty.

Founded in 1980, Books of Wonder is one of New York City’s top children’s bookstores and a hot spot for early readers. As the largest children’s bookstore in NYC, its large selection of both new and used books will not disappoint. Visitors can browse a carefully curated selection of books for babies through teens, as well as vintage, old, rare, and collectible editions for collectors and those looking for long-lost treasures.

Bank Street Bookstore is specifically intended for kids. On the shelves, you will find many classics and popular books of today, and you may also find a locally written or independent title you might not discover elsewhere. Along with a large selection of children’s books, the shop has a small nook for relaxing with a book, as well as many chances to hear authors read at storytime.

The most beautiful spaces for young readers

Tucked inside the historic Payne Whitney mansion, Albertine is the only bookshop in New York devoted to books in French, with more than 14,000 contemporary and classic titles from 30 French-speaking countries. The bookstore has a strong children’s section with various reading levels and selections, and offers many children’s events and readings. For families who value craft and aesthetic experience alongside literacy, this Upper East Side address is truly exceptional.

The Strand, at 828 Broadway near East 12th Street, is a verified NYC institution selling “18 miles” of books, including an eclectic children’s selection. Parents check the Strand’s event calendar regularly for upcoming storytimes and character visits from beloved children’s books, including Madeline, Clifford, Splat the Cat, and, over the holidays, the Grinch. Also worth knowing: Book Culture has 4 stores in New York City. The Queens location’s entire bottom floor is dedicated to kids’ books, games, and toys. The bookstore offers a strong schedule of programming at its shops, including musical storytimes, Spanish classes, and storytimes in English, German, and Spanish.

The best free and low-cost storytime events

Every Saturday from June through August, families are invited to Central Park for one of Manhattan’s most cherished traditions: live storytelling at the Hans Christian Andersen statue near the Boat Pond. Now in its 70th year, this free series features world-class storytellers and musicians sharing fairytales, folklore, and classic Andersen stories in a shaded outdoor setting.

The New York Public Library offers storytimes, author events, and book talks alongside crafts, activities, and games. Every weekday, families can enjoy new storytimes by expert children’s librarians as they read beloved books, sing songs, and share early literacy tips. The NYPL Story Line also provides recorded children’s books performed by librarians in English, Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, and Japanese.

For a deeper literary experience, children ages 8 and up can visit the Thalia Kids Book Club at Symphony Space. The series brings young readers and well-known authors together for creative writing projects, open discussions, book signings, and readings.

An independent bookseller’s perspective

Every child who walks through a bookshop door is looking for something, even if they cannot name it yet. The best children’s bookstores in a city like New York do not just sell books. They curate an emotional experience. A well-placed picture book at a child’s eye level, a storytime that uses voice and silence together, a signed first edition on a low shelf: these small decisions create readers for life. Independent bookshops invest in community in a way that no algorithm can replicate. The physical space matters enormously. When a child associates reading with beauty, warmth, and belonging, you build a habit that lasts decades.

Events that connect books to community

The Brooklyn Book Festival announces its full schedule each year for Children’s Day. The event takes place at Brooklyn Commons in MetroTech, and it promises educational activities for kids and their families. It is designed to inspire a love of reading and creativity. The day features workshops, performances, storytelling sessions, literary games, book signings, and a Children’s Book Market.

Prospect Park Alliance partners with Spilling Ink for a series of hands-on storytelling workshops where children become the makers, dreamers, and tellers of their own stories. Through mask-making, story circles, and imaginative play, children explore feelings, create characters, and bring stories to life.

The DiMenna Children’s History Museum at the New-York Historical Society on the Upper West Side hosts a weekly storytime for children ages 3 to 7 on Sunday mornings at 11:30am. The featured books often correspond to the museum’s current exhibitions.
