Club de natación en NYC: entrena todo el año

From indoor pools to Brighton Beach, New York City has a swimming community ready for every level.

A swimming club in this city is easier to find than you think, and the water never really closes.

Why a swimming club changes everything

Most people who swim in New York City swim alone. They book a lane, do their laps, and leave. A swimming club flips that experience completely. You train with people who share your goals, you get structured workouts, and you stay accountable through winter when motivation disappears.

The city has a large network of clubs for all levels. Some focus on pool training all year. Others move between indoor lanes and open-water sessions by the season. The right one depends on your goals, your schedule, and how far you want to go.

Starting with a club also gives you access to coaches, event calendars, and safety systems you cannot build alone. That infrastructure matters most in open water, where conditions change fast and no one should swim without support.

The public pools that anchor year-round training

Before you join any club, know what the city already provides. NYC Parks recreation centers with pools offer access to year-round swimming and aquatics programs, with an annual membership that costs $150 for adults and $25 for seniors. Membership is free for anyone 24 and under. That is one of the best fitness deals in the five boroughs.

When you join a recreation center with a pool, you get access to year-round swimming and free aquatics programs, and your membership covers every recreation center in the city, including all 12 indoor pools. That network gives you flexibility across all 5 boroughs. You are never more than a few subway stops from a lane.

NYC Parks also brings back Adult Lap Swim in summer, with 1 pool per borough, including Van Cortlandt Park pool in the Bronx, Kosciuszko pool in Brooklyn, Thomas Jefferson Park pool in Manhattan, Astoria Park pool in Queens, and Lyons Pool Recreation Center on Staten Island. These dedicated lap sessions let fitness swimmers train without interruption from general swim crowds.

The open-water organizations based in Brooklyn

For swimmers who want ocean training, Brooklyn is the center of New York City’s open-water community. The Red Tide Open Water Team swims all year at Brighton Beach and Coney Island, a short trip from any NYC borough. The team includes members who range from open-water beginners to experienced swimmers ranked nationally and internationally in open-water events and races.

CIBBOWS, the Coney Island Brighton Beach Open Water Swimmers, is another anchor of this community. Their mission is to be a community resource for ocean swim training, races, and supervised open-water test swims, and to promote the sport of open-water swimming and access to New York waterways. They meet at Grimaldo’s Chair at 10:00 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Team New York Aquatics (TNYA) integrates open-water skills into indoor workouts, and members participate in open-water events when they are in season. In the past, TNYA members have competed in events such as the CIBBOWS Grimaldo Mile, the Coney Island Polar Bear Swim, and the 20 Bridges Swim around Manhattan. TNYA is also a welcoming club for LGBTQ+ athletes and their allies.

What the open-water community says about getting started

Getting into open-water training is not about being fast. It is about learning to stay calm in a dynamic environment. The first thing any new swimmer should do is join a group that prioritizes safety, such as a club with experienced members who know the local currents and conditions. Solo open-water swimming in New York Harbor or at the city beaches carries real risk. A good community gives you spotters, kayak support, and honest feedback about your readiness. Most people progress faster in a group than they ever do alone, because the energy of other swimmers pushes you further than you expect. Start with supervised group swims, attend a clinic, and build your distance slowly before you attempt longer routes.

How to choose the right swimming club for you

The right club is the one you will actually attend every week. Consider location first: a club that requires 3 subway changes is a club you will skip when work is hard. Then consider your current level. Open-water groups like CIBBOWS and Red Tide welcome beginners, but expect you to be a competent pool swimmer before you enter the ocean.

If organized competition interests you, look for clubs affiliated with U.S. Masters Swimming. New York Open Water is a not-for-profit organization that provides safety, support, and funding for open-water swimming and kayaking programs and events, while advocating for better stewardship of New York State’s natural water resources. Since 2016, New York Open Water has been the exclusive MSF-recognized governing body for swims around Manhattan Island.

Visit a club before you commit. Most groups allow a trial session. Talk to members, ask about the coach, and check whether the training schedule fits your life. A swimming club that fits your routine becomes a habit. A habit becomes a lifestyle.

Conclusion: your swimming club is waiting

A swimming club in New York City is not a luxury for competitive athletes. It is the most practical way for any swimmer to stay consistent, stay safe in open water, and keep improving all year. The city has public pools, dedicated ocean groups in Brooklyn, and organizations that run structured events from spring through autumn. Your swimming club is already out there. Sign up for a trial session, show up twice, and you will not stop. This city rewards the people who commit to it, and the water is no different.
