Artist residencies in NYC open now

These programs offer NYC artists real studio time, mentorship, and funding, and applications are open right now.

Artist residencies in New York City are quietly accepting applications right now, and if you know where to look, this August is the right moment to act.

Why August matters for open calls

Most people think residency season happens in winter. That assumption costs artists real opportunities. Hi-ARTS is now accepting applications for its 2026-27 CRITICAL BREAKS and SKY LAB Artist Residencies. CRITICAL BREAKS supports artists in a pivotal phase of developing new work, while SKY LAB supports artists who center community at the root of creative development, research, and process. Both programs are based right here in the city, and both are open now.

August is also when programs announce fall cycles and release application windows for the following year. The open call for Art Omi: Artists will run from August 14 to September 14, 2026. Art Omi invites artists, critics, and curators from around the world to gather in rural New York to experiment, collaborate, and share ideas. The application fee is $15, and the deadline arrives fast.

The key is checking listings more than once a month. Programs open and close on rolling schedules. Artists who check weekly catch the windows that others miss.

Programs worth applying to right now

KUNSTRAUM is calling for submissions for its Artist-in-Residence Program, a community of artists by artists with the goal of redefining the collaboration between artists and curators. The program offers 3-month residencies for national and international artists on a quarterly cycle, with open applications for the July-September and October-December periods. The program is based in Brooklyn, and studio access runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Ars Nova Artists in Residence program is accepting applications for its 2026-2027 cohort, designed for early-career performing artists across multiple disciplines, supporting artistic development over a 10-month season through individualized mentorship, institutional resources, and participation in an interdisciplinary cohort. Rather than focusing on the production of a finished work, the residency provides time, space, and sustained support to help artists advance a project, expand their practice, and build lasting relationships.

The New York Foundation for the Arts Opportunities Board lists open calls, residencies, educational posts, and more across the USA and internationally. Bookmark it. Check it every week. It is one of the most complete free tools available to any working artist in this city.

What these programs actually offer

Not all artist residencies look the same. Some give you studio space. Others give you money, mentorship, or a combination of all 3. The Powerhouse Arts Artist-in-Residence program is a paid, 6-month residency for early-career New York City-based artists to develop new ambitious, fabrication-driven work. It provides generous financial support, fabrication and materials funding, dedicated studio space, curatorial mentorship, and access to fabrication facilities and expert technicians.

The Latinx Project at NYU offers the artist-in-residence an honorarium award of up to $10,000 and a $5,000 production budget for a solo exhibition at New York University, with the option of curatorial support and public programming opportunities. That is real money, and the exposure that comes with a solo exhibition at NYU is not something most artists find elsewhere.

The Public Artists in Residence (PAIR) program is a municipal residency that embeds artists in city government to propose and implement creative solutions to pressing civic challenges. Since establishing the program, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs has embedded 24 artists in 15 agencies. PAIR represents a different kind of studio: the whole city becomes your workspace.

Perspective from the field

Programs that support artists in the real conditions of making work, not just the polished finished product, are the ones that change careers. In New York, the competition for studio time and institutional access is intense. Open-call programs level that playing field by removing gatekeepers and letting the work speak. Artists should apply broadly, apply honestly, and not self-select out of opportunities because they assume they are not ready. The programs that attract the strongest cohorts are the ones that actively look for emerging voices, not just established names. Every application is also a rehearsal for the next one. The process itself sharpens the practice.

How to build a strong application

Start with the basics. Read the full guidelines before you write a single word. Programs reject applications for missing materials, not just weak ones. The most compelling applications engage with larger contemporary or historic dialogues relevant to the program’s curatorial focus. Know what the program values. Then show how your work connects to that.

Artists working across all mediums are encouraged to apply to many NYC programs, but applicants must reside in one of the 5 boroughs of New York City to qualify for city-funded opportunities. Check residency requirements before investing time in an application. Some programs are open to international artists. Others are strictly local.

Follow deadlines exactly. These artist residencies in New York are accepting applications right now, but deadlines must be checked carefully, as many programs only open once or twice a year. A missed deadline is a full year lost. Set a reminder for every program you plan to apply to.
