NYC Parks brings free arts and cultural events across all 5 boroughs. Through its Arts, Culture and Fun series, you can try your hand at an artistic pursuit in art workshop sessions at a park or recreation center near you.

Seeds of the League brings that same approach directly to public parks.

Low-cost art classes at the YMCA
The YMCA of Greater New York offers classes in painting, drawing, ceramics, and more that let you explore your creative side. Summer programming starts in late June, with member registration opening first and community registration opening shortly after. You can explore branch offerings and join the Y for early access and discounts.
At the Y, no family is turned away because of the inability to pay. That policy applies to program registration as well. Contact your nearest branch directly to ask about financial assistance for art classes.
Mixed media and scratchboard: more free options in the parks
NYC Parks also runs mixed media workshops that push participants to explore different techniques of a versatile art form. A 3-week scratchboard art workshop invites you to explore the process of creating a masterpiece that begins as a completely dark surface. It is free.
Other sessions focus on naturally inspired patterns such as shells, leaves, or feathers, and teach participants to create abstract art using organic forms. These sessions are also free.
